Countdown to Scotland’s Classic Rock Weekender - Only three weeks til the seaside town of Troon Rocks…

The organisers of WinterStorm 2016 in Troon in Ayrshire are getting ready to blow away some winter cobwebs with the first Classic Rock Weekender by the sea!

A weekend of guitar riffs “Doon the Watter” with two days of Seaside Rock with a bit of AOR, a touch of NWOBHM, a hint of the Blues, with some of the best new and classic rock bands at Troon Concert Hall and other venues around town.

As well as the main stage at Troon Concert Hall they have this week unveiled a host of add-ons to the event aimed at making the weekend an annual must do for music lovers.

Line Up

The line-up for the inaugural event has been knocking rock fans for six with the standard reaction being variants of “A Rock Weekend in Troon?”
The weekend includes fourteen bands from across genres and as well as the main headline acts will introduce some superb un-signed bands such as the much lauded Bloodlines, The Hyena Kill and Concrete Kingdoms. Some names from the past will provide classic rock nostalgia with sets from the likes of FM, Praying Mantis and Tygers of Pan Tang taking us back to the days of the eighties rock scene and newer bands such as world superbike champion Toseland, The Amorettes and Inglorious.

The event is being MC’d by the legendary rock DJ Tom Russell who only last week released his autobiography, jumped at the chance to be involved,

“I think it’s magnificent that a town like Troon is putting itself firmly on the Rock map and it this event gets the support it’ll be great not only for rock fans from all over the Uk and beyond but also for local businesses and tourism. It’ll be great fun to get down the coast for the weekend, listen to some wonderful musicians and get that Ayrshire sea air.”

Family Friendly Festival Fun

This week has also seen the unveiling of a raft of events aimed at getting the locals more involved with the announcement of 200 free tickets for youth groups across Ayrshire, the introduction of a Guitar Workshops stage and a free admission acoustic stage and bar providing music overlooking the beach until late at night.

Event organiser Ian McCaig continued the story,

“With only three weeks to go we have started releasing the extras for the weekend and having secured the necessary licencing last week can now start to promote the free events taking place in support of the paid acts. WE really hope to engage with local businesses, families and visitors with somewhere different to spend the weekend – we’ll have food, drink, stalls and a hands on guitar area and all that supported by a free music area with a family area to sit and listen to more than twelve hours of free music over the weekend.”

“We have had the aim all along of introducing the younger market to music and with these new events we hope we can attract families along to see that there is more to music than the X Factor!.”

Late Night Addition

The rock fans in the town will not only have the main stage they also can now enjoy the after show party in the “Sessions Room in the Concert Hall.
“We were delighted to be trusted with a 1am licence for the weekend and it means that the after show party can take place with the bands mingling with fans and we’ll be playing classic rock in there from 10pm. It’s free admission too so it’s somewhere different for Ayrshire folk to have a night out. It’s not often you can get so close to the beach!”

Online tickets are still on sale and they are cheaper than the on the door prices and with the closing sets timed to finish ahead of the last train back to Glasgow it can be expected that these last tickets will be snapped up in advance.

The organisers are trying to market this as a weekend event,

“We are not only selling weekend tickets but the accommodation inclusive packages in the local hotels have been a really strong selling point. The event was aimed not only at locals but also the longer term aim of attracting “music tourists” to the area -  we’ve sold almost half the hotel inclusive packages already to rockers from as far away as south Wales, South east and even Germany!”

Weekend tickets are the best value at under £50 each for the Concert Hall and WinterStorm are committed to promoting live music to kids with accompanied under 16s are admitted for only £20 for the weekend.

The full line up and ticket prices are available at www.winterstorm.co.uk and of course can follow updates on the usual social media.

Not something that you hear very often but, hey, it looks like Troon Rocks...
